JAS has been designing alloys for additive manufacturing since 2006. That experience has taught us a few things, first, AM is not the same as Thermal Spray. Additive powders must be pure, fully dense, highly spherical and have extraordinarily consistent morphology. If an alloy powder doesn't meet these criteria, AM can sometimes feel more like an engineered art than a science. Clients often express frustration over using a meticulously constructed printing processes only to experience inconsistent results.

Base Particle Materials:
Outer Layers Protect Base Particle from:
Magnesium (Mg) for example, has both low melting and boiling points and high vapor pressure creating an impossible challenge for Additive Manufacturing. Alloys like Al12Mg17 and Al6061, which posses incredible corrosion resistant properties, have been disregarded by the AM industry. By coating Mg with layers of high melting point nanoparticles (such as Si and W) however, we can change how the alloy reacts to various AM processes. Partial melting of surface particles produces radiation heat that will melt Mg. Rapid cooling produces a finished part with a fine uniform microstructure.
